John Legend
Nokia Theatre, October 2006
by Lupe Ayala
Vocalist/pianist John Legend entertained his adoring fans at New York's Nokia Theatre. It was apparent throughout the evening how far he has come as an artist since his 2004 debut, Get Lifted.
Legend opened the performance with the soulful and gospel-inspired "Heaven Only Knows," in which his vocals were smooth and silky. He then got funky on "Let's Get Lifted," which segued into "Save Room." Legend gave the audience what they wanted by just about covering all his singles from Get Lifted and his latest CD, Once Again. He shined masterfully on "Show Me" and "Again" from the soul-induced Once Again CD, to the delight of his fans.
His fans have grown in an amazing number in a short period of time. A look around saw female audience members mesmerized by the artist and hanging on his every musical note. Legend's backing band was equally as impressive and a perfect complement to his piano style.
Midway through the performance, Legend sang the war-inspired "Coming Home," the romantic number "Each Day Gets Better" and the love-torn ballad "Maxine."
A few numbers later, he exited the stage after the gorgeous "Ordinary People." However, fans weren't about to let go of Legend so easily, as they immediately began chanting his name and insisted he return to the stage. Without question, he returned with "Stay With You" and ended the show gracefully with "So High," from Get Lifted.
After this magical performance, no more convincing is needed that John Legend has become a star in his own right.
