Long Island Honors Its Own
Patchogue Theater Hosts Historic Event
by Rich Hughes
The big day finally arrives this month. On Saturday, October 15, the Long Island Music Hall of Fame will hold its first induction ceremony at the Patchogue Theater. Twenty-eight artists from the LIMHoF’s first class of 50 inductees will be officially honored in a star-studded event that will feature plenty of celebrity presenters and live musical performances by some of Long Island’s musical legends.
Scheduled for induction are Mose Allison, Sam Ash Sr., Tony Bennett, Gary U.S. Bonds, Harry Chapin, George M. Cohan, John Coltrane, Perry Como, James (Jimmy) D’Aquisto, George Gershwin, Richie Havens, Joan Jett, Billy Joel, Cyndi Lauper, Edward "Little Buster" Forehand, the Long Island Philharmonic, Johnny Maestro and the Brooklyn Bridge, Marian McPartland, George "Shadow" Morton, Run-DMC, Neil Sedaka, Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley and Peter Criss (the Long Island members of KISS), SUNY Stony Brook, Stray Cats, Sam Taylor, Twisted Sister, Vanilla Fudge and Leslie West. The second half of the inaugural class of 50 will be honored in October 2007.
According to Hall of Fame chairman Richard L'Hommedieu, "This first group of 50 inductees, which we will be honoring over the course of the next two years, represents Long Island’s long and diverse contributions to the world’s musical landscape. The Long Island Music Hall of Fame has taken great care to celebrate within that ‘First 50’ the Long Islanders who represent some of the extraordinary contributions Long Island has made to the history of music, not only in America but throughout the world. It is our hope that these ‘First 50’ will demonstrate that Long Island has been, and will continue to be, a consistent and never-ending wellspring of world-class musical talent."
Scheduled attendees at the October 15 show as of this date include Mose Allison, Gary U.S. Bonds, Peter Criss, Billy Joel, Johnny Maestro and the Brooklyn Bridge, Joan Jett, Marion McPartland, George "Shadow" Morton, members of Stray Cats, Sam Taylor, Twisted Sister, members of Vanilla Fudge, Leslie West and Mountain, family members of Harry Chapin, Jimmy D’Aquisto, George Gershwin and Little Buster, plus representatives of the Long Island Philharmonic and SUNY Stony Brook.
While the schedule of musical performances is still being worked out as of this writing, it is confirmed that Jen Chapin will be doing a musical tribute to her father. Celebrity presenters will include actor Alec Baldwin, musical legends Joe Bonamassa and Felix Cavaliere, Brookhaven Town Supervisor Brian X. Foley, comedian Jackie "The Jokeman" Martling and Paul Shaffer of The Late Show with David Letterman.
It should be a proud day for Long Island music. You can learn more at the Long Island Music Hall of Fame website at www.limusichalloffame.org.
One other show I want to highlight this month is the Long Island stop of the Girls Rock & Girls Rule Tour on Saturday, October 7, at Lefty’s Candlelight Lounge in Lindenhurst. GRGR’s mission is to create awareness and exposure for independent female artists while helping women in the community. A portion of the proceeds from the show will benefit Habitat for Humanity’s Women Build program Suffolk Chapter.
The show will start at 4:30 p.m. and will be hosted by The J. of Radio Xposed. Featured artists will include the Chores, Evelyn Red, Sea of Static, Iridesense, Jimmy Krack Corn, Lorraine Ferro (of Loudlife), G-Spot, Rewbee and Loki the Grump. The show will also feature special appearances by members of the Long Island Roller Rebels. Sounds like entertainment to me. The website is www.revolutionaryrecords.com.
That’s it for this month. To send information about Long Island’s original music scene, please e-mail me at longislandvibes@hotmail.com.
