Leading the Next Generation of Classical Guitarists

Ana Vidovic Offers Advice and Inspiration
by James Rushmore

Ana Vidovic is one of the most talented young classical guitarists in the world. Her spectacular technique and beautiful sense of interpretation have placed her among the top performers gracing today’s concert stages. I recently had an opportunity to ask Ana a few questions about her DVD release on Mel Bay Records and her advice to today’s performers.

InsideCx<: You have done a fantastic DVD on Mel Bay Records. When was that filmed?

AV: That was filmed last year in Florida and it is my first DVD. I am very honored to have the opportunity to make this DVD for Mel Bay Records. It is a great promotional tool.

InsideCx: What made you choose the pieces you performed on this DVD?

AV: I chose those pieces as a representation of my favorite pieces. The music of J.S. Bach has always been a favorite of mine, as well the other works by Paganini, Ponce, Walton, etc. I just love those pieces!

InsideCx: You began playing the guitar at a very early age. What about the guitar first caught your attention?

AV: My older brother Victor is a guitarist, as well as my father. I would have to say that my older brother was my biggest influence and idol. When I heard him playing, I was captivated by the sound of the guitar and wanted to try it myself. The support of my family was very important in my development as well.

InsideCx: The 21st century presents many new advantages with advancements in technology. How have you taken advantage of new technology?

AV: I am working on a recording for the Orchard, which will be fully downloadable on the Internet. I really want to present the classical guitar to as many people as possible, and it is important to demonstrate the classical guitar to different audiences.

InsideCx: What are your goals with your playing?

AV: Performing with orchestras is my biggest goal. It is very exciting to be surrounded with the sound of the orchestra while I am performing. I also am very interested in new works by new composers; I am always looking for something new to play.

InsideCx: Do you teach at a college or university?

AV: I am teaching privately, but not at any schools. It is difficult with my performing schedule. When I am touring I also do a lot of master classes. It is very rewarding to share my experiences and knowledge with other guitarists, to see their different interpretations and technical issues and discuss them. I really love to teach and hope to do more in the future.

InsideCx: There is a large population of newcomers to classical guitar. What advice can you give them?

AV: We need to be influenced by many different styles. I think that is very important. It is important to study the classics and technique, but also to look ahead and to look around a lot as well. New students need to experiment, find what works.

InsideCx: Where do you see classical music fit in today’s musical culture?

AV: I am interested in crossover music, classical music mixed with pop and rock. I think that is OK as long as it’s true to the different styles. Artists who cross over need to stay true to themselves and to their roots. I think that there will be an increase into crossover for classical artists, but true classical music will always remain pure.

InsideCx: What is your advice to all musicians?

AV: I love what I do, and I wouldn’t do it if I didn’t love it. Being a musician isn’t an easy life. You have to do the best you can to succeed, find good teachers and set goals for yourself. It is important to be patient, persistent and believe in yourself.
